Training Philosophy

How we coach...

We coach based on both science and experience. In our view, Personal Coaching for cyclists is based on goal setting, communication, and monitoring athlete performance over time.

Before you start training with us we make sure athlete and coach have identified training and performance goals. This is the key aspect of a successful partnership. Next, we focus in communicating training plans, knowledge, hands-on expertise and detailed instructions to you through a online training schedule/log, personal meetings, phone calls or by e-mail. And last but not least, with today's widely available training tools like Power Meters we can easily quantify intensity and volume of your training and keep track of your development as an athlete.

Periodization...

The key to be a successful cyclist is a fundamental scientific approach to training. As early as 1936 scientists like Hans Selye started to investigate the mechanisms of load, overload and recovery. Later, in the 1940's, Russian scientist discovered that athletic performance improved by varying the training stress throughout the year rather than maintaining a constant training load. Leonid Matveyev developed a basic periodization model in 1964 which set the standard for many years to follow:

East German and Romanian scientists, especially Dr. Tudor Bompa, further developed that concept and the system of Periodization was born. Bompa studies, also known as the "father of periodization", helped the Eastern Block countries to dominate in sports from the 1960's on. Later on, periodization got "Westernized" and implemented by many athletes and coaches in the United States, Australia, and China.

We believe in the original concept of volume, intensity, overload, and recovery and will work with an athlete together in order to achieve specific goals. The annual training year is divided in different cycles and preparation, competition, and transition phases build the key components of our training approach.

Analysis...

With the help of our Lactate Threshold Testing we can determine your current fitness status before starting a structured training plan. Based on this data we will design a custom plan which meets your needs and figures in your work or school schedule. If you own a Heart Rate Monitor or Power Meter we can analyze training & competition data and easily monitor and adjust your training.

Psychology and Tactics...

There are certain aspects in cycling you can't learn from a coach or instructor who does not has the relevant specific athletic background. We at ROTHE Training will give you detailed instructions on race tactics, what to watch for, what skills to use in what situation, and how to be become a successful athlete in general.
